Overview
I led the UX/UI design for the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) virtual training application, which was a way to streamline the onboarding process for prison volunteers to reduce the time required from in-person training and background checks.
Project vision
Challenge
A way to keep track of volunteer records and participation for all assessments
Reduce the work effort for the Reentry Affairs Coordinators (RACs)
To allow for more comfort and time for volunteers when they visit the institutions
Starting The Training Assessment
The training sessions are separated into two categories - Training Modules for online assessments and Training Forms to physically print and bring in to sign/be signed.
Policy Statement
A way to legally acknowledge the only person taking the assessments is the assigned person.
Training Module
There are three sessions the volunteer has to complete in order to move on to the next section. This is a way to avoid fatigue and keep track of their progress.
Videos are also supplemented to give context as to why other volunteers donate their time within the prison system and how the institutions operate as a whole, to reconfirm their decision.

Goal
To reduce the time approved volunteers spent completing background checks, an online application system was developed to replace the previously in-person process.
Reentry Affairs Coordinators (RACs) had also been required to track training records across multiple physical locations, which became a major pain point and caused delays. Transitioning to an online training system resolved many of these issues, making it easier for RACs to support approved volunteers while speeding up the process.
Benefit 01
Enhances record keeping
of participation, progress and completion to enforce security and compliance.
Benefit 02
Reduces RAC administrative
effort for delivering Initial Training to focus on mission critical work.
Benefit 03
Gives Volunteers more time
to ask questions, complete fingerprints and learn about institution in person.
Result
The implementation of the online training system significantly improved the volunteer onboarding process. By automating and centralizing training records, the average onboarding time was reduced by 33%, allowing approved volunteers to begin their roles more quickly.
RACs experienced increased efficiency, as the need for manual, location-based record-keeping was eliminated. This streamlined approach enabled RACs to process a higher volume of volunteers in less time, reduced administrative errors, and improved overall compliance.
As a result, the program saw increased volunteer satisfaction and retention, ultimately enhancing support services within the facility.
